Strong nations win the thrones .As brawny youth symbolize a powerful nation ,similarly strong skeleton ensures healthy individual. Health is a great blessing , only healthy people can enjoy secure future and earn prosperity. Our bones are very important part of our body and their safety is for sure means a lot to our perfect health, any disturbance in the bones can lead to many physical disabilities.
Our skeleton is a framework of bones containing protein (collagen)and minerals mainly calcium and phosphate. Each bone has a thick outer shell known as cortical bone and a strong inner spongy mesh, with blood and bone marrow between the struts of bone.
Two types of cells (building blocks) work side by side in our bones; Osteocytes ( bone making cells ) and Osteoclasts ( bone eating cells). In early life, osteocytes work harder, building skeleton. From our 40s onwards, the osteoclasts become more active and our bones gradually lose their density. This can lead to a disease Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis (osteon= Bone + porosis= porous ) occurs when the struts that make up this structure become thin due to imbalance between new bone formation and old bone resorption. The body may fail to form enough new bone, or too much old bone may be reabsorbed, or both.
Our genes ( Information that pass from generation to next generation ) decide the potential size and strength of our skeleton, but our life style and diet are much more important, apart from these, various diseases and certain hormonal deficiencies can cause this trouble. Calcium and phosphate are two mineral essential for bone formation. Throughout youth, the body uses these minerals to produce bones. If calcium intake is not sufficient or lack of Vitamin D which helps in absorption of mineral to the bones , bone production may suffer. Thus, the bones may become weaker, resulting in fragile and brittle bones that can break easily. Thus Osteoporosis means a ‘greater risk of fracture’.
Daily use of:
Dairy products ( Milk, Yogurt , Cheese, Ice cream etc. )
Meat , fish ,and egg
